About Tom Smith
Tom Smith left school at 15 and enrolled at Henry Boot training. After completing the General Construction course he moved onto the Joinery Course and completed this in approximately 6 months which at the time was the fastest to completion of an NVQ level 2 in the history of Henry Boot.
After leaving Henry Boot he worked through agencies on numerous sites as a labourer to gain experience within the industry, where he assisted skilled trades and received very positive references from the site Managers on all the sites he worked on.
Due to his age, now only 16 and his lack of experience, he found it extremely difficult to secure a permanent placement... but he always managed to find paid work! Eventually, Tom was offered a position at Rion Windows working on the production line manufacturing UPVC windows and doors.
In 1998 he secured a job in commercial glazing with a sub contractor working away on the Millennium Dome. This was a great experience for Tom and sleeping in the back of a van onsite next to the Thames through the winter kept him focus on the work. After completing this contract he continued in this trade working on various Architectural Structural glazing projects before leaving in 1999 to find higher paid work prior to the arrival of his first Daughter.
Again, working through various agencies and moving from job to job Tom was fortunate to be offered a position as a joiner/shop fitter for a local company where he worked manufacturing shop fittings and onsite in various stores as as fitter. Tom thrived in this role and was quickly heading up a small team completing contracts, often ahead of deadlines.
Tom continued to work on sites across the UK until in 2003, when he was presented with the opportunity to buy 50% of the sub-contractor's business. Rather than taking this opportunity he negotiated with the owner and co-formed Surefix Direct Ltd, creating a first class Installations Company.
In December 2003 Tom bought out the Co Director and embarked on the arduous journey running the company single handed. After a drought of work Tom's philosophy to continuously market throughout recessive times paid dividends and through his persistence, was rewarded when he secured many large contracts, working for a variety of companies nationwide, building a 'blue-chip' client portfolio .
In 2009, at the brink of recession, Tom's continuous marketing and research effort identified a potential niche in the market to enable the small business owner to place a quality advertisement on an industry focused web based directory - allowing the small business owner to compete on a level playing field with multi-nationals.
Tom embarked on his mission and created Construction4me, providing an effective construction networking and showcase site for everyone involved in the construction industry, at an annual price which was affordable. The site also caters for the Construction site Management, enabling them to showcase the build and handle all PR aspects to provide information and progress updates to the site, the local area and beyond.
In seeking innovative and effective ways to attract the attention of the Main Contractors, Tom created Sitecoms, which is based on his experience working in various capacities on different sites over the past seventeen years.
SiteComs enables a simple and effective method for Main Contractors and Construction companies to communicate directly. The emphasis focusing on site level communication, keeping everyone in the loop, notifying the site of important changes to the site environment, negating delay caused by a lack of or poor communication and allowing for better planning of works.
Sitecom's objective has been achieved as it has proved to dramatically shorten the time taken to relay messages onsite, reducing the triangulation of communication through site staffs respective companies whilst relying on the passing of messages accurately form the company office to the site staff.
